In Australia, research, manufacture, production, commercial release and import of GMOs are regulated under the Gene Technology Act 2000 by the Gene Technology Regulator (GTR). Every dealing with a GMO needs to be licensed by GTR, unless the dealing is an Exempt Dealing, a Notifiable Low Risk Dealing or on the Register of GMOs. Three advisory committees, the Gene Technology Technical Advisory Committee (GTTAC), the Gene Technology Community Consultative Committee (GTCCC) and the Gene Technology Ethics Committee (GTEC), provide advice to GTR and the Ministerial Council.
