Main functions

 

            To undertake field visits at the experimental site(s) approved by the RCGM for the purpose of collecting    scientific information on the comparative agronomic advantages of the transgenic plants.

 

            To prepare formats for collecting scientific information on transgenic crops in limited field trials based on the experimental design approved by the RCGM.   

 

            To advise, time to time, the RCGM on the risks and benefits from the use of the transgenic plants put into evaluation. The committee to suggest new experimental design(s) to RCGM and also assist in collecting, consolidating and analyzing the field data for evaluating the environmental risks emanating from the transgenic plants. 

                                                           

            To apprise the RCGM on those transgenic crops which would find environmentally safe and economically viable for recommending the same to Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) for consideration for release into the environment.

 

            To undertake field visits at the experimental site(s) approved by the GEAC for the purpose of collecting scientific information, based on specific request made by the GEAC. The Committee to submit its report to GEAC directly with information to RCGM.

 

            To constitute, if necessary, monitoring team(s) to visits experimental sites for the purpose of collecting scientific information.

 

           To undertake occasionally, specific jobs on the request of RCGM, which are not enumerated above.

Terms and Conditions of the Commitee

 

1.) The Committee (MEC) shall undertake field visits at the experimental site(s) approved   by the   RCGM. If necessary, the MEC shall constitute Monitoring Team(s) to visits experimental sites for the purpose of collecting scientific information.

 

2.) The committee shall prepare formats for collecting scientific information on transgenic crops in limited field trials based on the experimental design approved by the RCGM.

 

3.) The Committee shall collect the information on the comparative agronomic advantages of the transgenic plants.

 

4.) The Committee shall advise, time to time, the RCGM on the risks and benefits from the use of the transgenic plants put into evaluation. The committee can suggest new experimental design(s) to RCGM and also assist in collecting, consolidating and analyzing the field data for evaluating the environmental risks emanating from the transgenic plants.

 

5.) The Committee shall evaluate the field trial data and apprise the RCGM on those  transgenic crops which would found environmentally safe and economically viable for the RCGM to recommend to Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, for consideration for release into the environment.

 

6.) The Committee may undertake field visits at the experimental site(s) approved by the     GEAC for the purpose of collecting scientific information, based on specific request made by the GEAC. The Committee may submit its report to GEAC directly with      information to RCGM.

 

7.) Occasionally, RCGM can also request the Committee to do specific jobs which were not enumerated above.

 

8.) The Committee shall maintain all the information provided by the applicants as confidential.

 

9.) The Committee shall function for a period of three years from the date of notification.

 

10.) The members of the committee shall be paid TA/DA as per the Government rules & regulations.
